It has been reported that several industry figures have accused Government ministers of betraying the north with a delayed and downgraded £96bn rail plan.
Some figures within the Labour Party have and beyond have said the downgraded plans have sold out the north.
This is the reaction of Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester. He tweeted: "The patronising 'the-North-should-be-grateful-for-what-it’s-given' mentality that’s been on display over the last 24 hours is the primary reason why we have such a large North-South divide in this country."
He also told The Peston Show: “I think there are a lot of worried people across the North of England tonight."
Labour MP and South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis told BBC News: "Despite all the promises and the commitments the government have made, they have not honoured those obligations."

Labour MP and South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis says "most of us are left bitterly disappointed" by new rail planhttps://t.co/beYiNRMtn4 pic.twitter.com/gsAvdXEq9t
Jarvis had previously tweeted: "If the reports are right, the government’s rail plans represent a failure of ambition for the North, a betrayal of their commitments, and a catastrophic misjudgement that will harm the whole country. It’s tinkering dressed up as transformation."
