News: Austria first EU nation to reimpose national lockdown

Austria returned to a Covid-19 lockdown on Monday morning. People in the country are not allowed to leave home except to go to work, shop for essentials and exercise. Thousands of people throughout the country took to the streets on Saturday to protest against the mesures measures.  Some people are blaming the government for not doing more to avert the latest coronavirus wave crashing into Europe. They are also imposing a sweeping vaccine mandate from 1 February. They join the Vatican as the only places in Europe with such a requirement. Several countries across Europe have reintroduced curbs. Some have started to ban unvaccinated people from venues including restaurants and bars. Not since the Covid vaccination was introduced has an EU country had to re-enter a nationwide lockdown. This decision destroys some of the earlier promises that tough virus restrictions would no longer happen. More reaction We spoke to a number of people about the latest lockdown measures via video call.

GMP News: Man arrested as part counterfeit prescription medication crackdown

A man has been arrested as part of a crackdown into the supply and distribution of illicit and counterfeit prescription medication across the region. Earlier this year in April, neighbourhood officers in Cheetham Hill carried out a raid at an address on Fulshaw Walk, Ardwick, where almost £40k in cash, suspected to be from the illegal supply of illicit prescription medication in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester, was seized. A number of lines of enquiry and a thorough investigation has been on-going since as part of Operation Cranium. Further searches have been continuously carried out at addresses across Cheetham Hill and an address in Fallowfield where approximately £8,500 worth of illicit Benzodiazepine drugs and class B drugs have been seized. Officers arrested a 25-year-old on suspicion of possession of class B drugs with intent to supply, obstructing police and money laundering. He remains in custody at this time. Further searches carried out have led to more illicit drugs

An introduction to the 2022 Commonwealth Games

The 2022 Commonwealth Games, commonly known as Birmingham 2022, is a huge sports event for members of the Commonwealth. It will be held in Birmingham, England and be the third time England has hosted the Games, after London in 1934 and Manchester in 2002. The Games will take place between 28 July and 8 August 2022. Birmingham was announced as the host by the Commonwealth Games Federation at a press conference in December 2017. The venues  The venues are in Birmingham, Coventry, Royal Leamington Spa, Sandwell and London. The Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr is scheduled to host the ceremonies and athletics and is being renovated. The seating capacity will be increased permanently from 12,700 to 18,000 and will allow more than 30,000 people during the Games through additional temporary seating.
